Choosing a height

Two heights are settled by how people sit: 40cm (16") for a bench seat, and 71cm (28") for desk legs and dining table legs. Add a top of 20mm to 50mm to a 71cm leg and you land at a finished surface of 73cm to 76cm.

The rest overlap. Cabinet legs run 10cm to 35cm for sideboards and sofas, where the leg is mostly about proportion. Coffee table legs run 25cm to 40cm, from a low modern look up to a more practical height if you eat or work at it. Breakfast bar legs are 86cm (34") for counters, and 102cm (40") is bar height.

Choosing a style

Hairpin legs are the ones we started with: thin bent steel, based on the 1940s original by Henry P. Glass. Industrial table legs are squared box section, heavier in look, in shapes from square through to A-frame, V-frame and X-frame. Single pin and box hairpin legs sit between the two in weight. Wooden table legs in tapered oak are our solid wood option.

Style is a look choice rather than a strength rule. No shape is tied to a particular height.

Sets, pairs and frames

The format decides how the table goes together. Hairpins, single pins, box hairpins and tapered oak come as a set of four, one per corner, about 5cm in from each edge. Box section legs and wireframes come as a pair for the two ends.

Square and Quad table frames bolt together into a single self-supporting unit. Size the top to about double the frame's width: a 74cm frame takes a top up to around 150cm, which leaves 30cm to 40cm overhanging each end.

What you'll need

Choose a top from our table tops or bring your own. Every leg mounts on a plate that screws up into the underside, and screws come with every set. We suggest a top 20mm or thicker.

We can send a paper fitting template on request, or pre-drill the top for you. If the top flexes, which is the most common issue we see on a self-build, an L-channel stiffening bar underneath takes it out.

Every indoor leg carries our 5-year guarantee, with free UK delivery over £50 and 60-day returns.

FAQ

Where should the legs sit on the table?

Sets of four sit about 5cm in from each corner. For a pair, if you want to seat someone at the end of the table, allow between 30cm and 40cm of overhang so a chair fits; for side or bench seating they can sit close to the ends.

On a round table, match the leg count to the number of places, so a chair sits in the gap between each pair of legs. On a long table, resist adding a fifth leg in the middle. It is usually the wrong fix and it gets in the way of chairs. If the top flexes, an L-channel stiffening bar underneath solves it properly.

How much weight will table legs hold?

As a guide to stability, reckon on around 60kg for a classic hairpin set, around 120kg for the heavy duty version, and around 150kg for a box section pair or a frame.

In practice the top matters as much as the legs. The most common issue we see on a self-build is the top flexing rather than the legs moving.

Can I fit legs to a glass or stone top?

Not directly, since these legs screw into the underside. Fix the glass or stone to a wooden carrier first and screw the legs into that, or use a self-supporting frame, which holds the top without needing fixings driven into it.

Can I use these legs outdoors?

Some of them. Stainless steel is the best choice outdoors, though we currently stock it in hairpin legs only. Zinc electroplating is also hairpin-only.

Black powder coat holds up well outdoors, but keeping the coating intact is essential rather than optional. Any scratch through to bare steel lets rust start. It will not weaken the leg, but left untreated it spreads and looks poor over the years. Clear coat is not suitable outdoors at all.

Can I order a size or finish you do not stock?

Often, yes. We can make any of our legs in stainless steel to order, not just the ones we stock that way. If you need something outside the standard range, just contact us.
