Pick the height by how you'll use the table

Our coffee table legs run from 40cm (16") down to 25cm (10"), and the right height comes from what the table is for, not from the style of leg.

40cm (16") is the higher, more practical height. You do not have to reach down to it, so it suits a coffee table that sits up close to the sofa, within easy reach of a mug or a laptop. Under a normal top, a 40cm leg lands at a finished height of around 42cm, which is where a standard coffee table from IKEA and similar sits. It is the most usable everyday height.

35cm (14") is for a table that acts as the centrepiece of the room, holding coffee, books and objects. It sits a little lower and feels more relaxed.

30cm and 25cm (12" and 10") give a lower, more design-led look, and suit a top that adds its own height, such as a thick slab or a top with built-in storage. The choice at this end depends on the look you want and how much height the top brings: a chunky slab or a storage box underneath sits taller, so a shorter leg keeps the finished table at a sensible height.

The rough rule: the taller you go, up to 40cm, the more practical and easy to reach the table; the lower you go, the more it becomes a design statement or a partner for a heavy top.

Choosing a style

Hairpin legs come in sets of 4, placed about 5cm in from each corner, and single-pin legs are the same idea with one clean rod per leg instead of two. Tapered oak is our premium wood option; everything else in the range is steel, and these solid steel legs hold a coffee table rock-solid, so weight is never a limiting factor at this scale.

Placing the legs

Whatever the style, the top should overhang the legs by about 5–10cm. For hairpin sets that means fixing each leg roughly 5cm in from the corner. Mark the positions, check the spacing is even, then screw down.

What you'll need

Every leg mounts through a top plate that screws to the underside of the top. Screws and a build guide are included; the top itself is the one thing you supply. Our table tops cover the common sizes if you don't already have one. If you're after dining, desk or console heights instead, the full table legs range runs right up to 71cm (28").

FAQ

What height should coffee table legs be?

It depends on use. 40cm (16") is the higher, more practical height that you do not have to reach down to, which suits a table up close to the sofa; under a normal top that gives a finished height of around 42cm, the standard coffee table height. 35cm (14") suits a lower centrepiece table for coffee and books. 30cm down to 20cm (12" to 8") gives a lower, design-led table, or suits a top that adds its own height such as a thick slab or one with built-in storage.

Does the top thickness change the leg height I need?

Yes. The finished height is leg plus top, so a thicker slab wants a shorter leg. A 50mm slab on a 35cm (14") leg finishes at about the same height as a thin top on a 40cm (16") leg.

How much should the top overhang the legs?

About 5–10cm on each side. For hairpin sets, that means fixing each leg roughly 5cm in from the corner.

Do coffee table legs come in sets of 4 or in pairs?

Hairpin legs come in sets of 4, one per corner. Box-section legs go on in pairs, which suits longer or heavier tops.

How do the legs attach, and are fixings included?

Each leg has a top plate that screws to the underside of the top. Screws and a build guide are included; you supply the top.
