Seat heights: 42cm, 62cm and 70cm

Each of these is a stool base you finish with a top of your choice, your own or one of ours. You pick the base and its height, then add the seat. There are three heights: 42cm is standard seat height for sitting at a desk or dining table; 62cm is the seat height for a kitchen counter, around 90 to 95cm; and 70cm is the seat height for a bar, around 105 to 110cm. Fitted with a top, the shorter stools also double as a small side table, handy for a drink beside the sofa, or make a good plant stand.

Choosing a base

Three styles, and the height you need may point you to one. The Hairpin Stool Base is the classic steel hairpin form and comes in both 42cm (table) and 62cm (counter) heights. The Nord Stool Base is the 70cm bar-height base. The Prism Stool Base is a 42cm table-height base with its own geometric shape. All come in a clear-coat finish that shows the raw steel, or powder-coated black.

Adding a seat

The seat is sold separately, which is deliberate: it lets you match the top to your room rather than taking whatever comes in the box. The simplest route is the Solid Oak Stool Top from this range, available in natural oak or black. It is sized to pair with these bases. If you would rather make or source your own seat, that works too. Round or square, timber or upholstered, as long as it is rigid enough to take the fixing screws.

How it goes together

A finished stool is three things: a base, a seat and the screws that join them. The base fixes to the underside of the seat with wood screws driven up through the base's fixing plate. Check your screw length against the seat thickness so the points do not break through the top face. Assembly is a few minutes with a drill or screwdriver, and the stool can be taken apart again if you ever want to swap the seat.
