Choosing the right size legs

We make legs in a variety of standard heights:

You can find more detailed information about what height legs will be best for you here.

Will the legs be strong enough?

  • Short legs (under 40cm) – Shorter legs are inherently stronger and stiffer than their taller counterparts. You will be hard pressed to build something on small legs where weight is an issue. If you have any specific concerns, get in touch.

For our taller leg options, you can find weight loading guidelines for our different options here:

Will I need extra legs?

A single set of legs should be sufficient for most tabletops up to 1.8m - 2m long. For longer tables (2m+) please read our guide here.

Choosing the right finish

Our metal table legs are made with mild steel. We offer a number of different finish options to suit your project:

  • Raw Steel – This is uncoated steel in its natural form and will rust if left unfinished (indoors as well as out). We offer this option for those looking for a rusted industrial look or wanting to apply their own finish.
  • Clear Coat – These legs have a clear powder coat layer over the steel to protect them from rusting while maintaining the natural colour of the steel.
  • Colour Powder Coats – We offer all of our legs in a black powder coat, and the hairpins come in a variety of other colours too.
  • Electro-plated options – We currently offer hairpin legs electro-plated in Copper, Brass, Chrome, and Zinc.
  • Outdoor finishes – Some of our finishes are suitable for use outdoors. You can find all of our outdoor grade leg options here.

You can find some detailed guides on choosing the right finish here.

What's included?

All of our legs come with free wood screws and appropriate floor protectors.

How do I attach the legs, and what tools will I need?

With screws included, attaching our legs to your project should be very simple. We just recommend a few things:

  • A tape measure to get the positions of the legs in the right place
  • A pencil to mark the positions of the screw holes
  • A drill to predrill guide holes for the screws. We recommend a 2.5mm diameter guide hole for soft woods and a 3mm diameter guide hole for hard woods
  • A screwdriver to screw the legs in

That should cover almost everything you need to consider when choosing some of our legs. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Find out when to expect your order and how to track it. Delivery times and options depend on what you order and where it’s going.

At a glance

Delivery times

Standard UK delivery usually takes 1–4 days after dispatch, with most orders arriving next day.

Tops, pre-drilling, cutting or a booked delivery can need longer. For UK delivery, each product page has a live counter showing expected dispatch and delivery dates for your selected options. Check it after making your choices; any longer timing shown applies.

For all destinations, checkout gives the expected date or range for your order. If timing is unclear or you need an item for a particular date, contact us before ordering. Delivery dates are estimates.

Delivery options and couriers

Next-day, Saturday and AM upgrades are available where offered at checkout. Choose the service you need before paying.

Our main UK couriers are DPD, DHL Express and DHL Parcel. The carrier depends on your order and address; your tracking link shows who is delivering.

For a PO Box or military address, or if checkout offers no suitable service, contact us before ordering.

International delivery

We use DHL Express. Delivery costs depend on your basket and address and are calculated at checkout.

Transit is usually 2–4 days to Europe and around 3–7 days to the USA after dispatch. Use the date or range at checkout for your order; the live product-page counter covers UK delivery only. If your item needs work and the timing is unclear, contact us before ordering.

We prepay taxes on EU shipments, so most EU customers have no further import bill. Extra charges can still arise in some cases, including deliveries to business addresses in Germany. Contact us if you receive an unexpected charge.

Outside the EU, import duties and taxes may be payable on arrival unless checkout says they are included. Customs checks can affect delivery time.

Tracking and delivery help

Use the tracking link in your dispatch email, or contact us with your order number for an update. We can also help if something is late, missing or incorrect.

Check items on arrival, ideally before assembly. If anything is damaged, send photos of the item and packaging where possible. Please report damage within seven days if you can; this does not limit your legal rights.

For returns, see our Returns & refunds policy.

Returns Policy

We offer 60-day returns on eligible consumer purchases from hairpin.com. Your legal rights are unaffected.

At a glance

Our 60-day returns offer

Send eligible items back within 60 days of purchase, new, unused and complete with original labels, instructions and included parts.

Unmodified stock parts qualify, including undrilled configurator tops and legs. Pre-drilled named sets also qualify. The offer excludes assembled furniture, individually made items and pre-drilled configurator tops. Custom-work details explain the differences.

We may decline returns outside these conditions or offer a reduced refund, explaining any deduction or delivery cost first. Legal cancellation rights remain unaffected.

For a partial return, tell us what you want to keep. Each item follows its own terms. We will explain the refund; discount adjustments apply only where disclosed before purchase and lawful, without reducing your statutory entitlement.

How to return an item and return costs

  1. Email hello@hairpin.com with your order number and items to return. We will promptly provide the return address, instructions and a Return Authorisation (RMA) number.
  2. Keep and reuse original packaging where possible. Pack securely and include the RMA number if supplied. Inadequate packing may affect your refund where lawful.

You do not need permission or an RMA to give valid legal cancellation notice. We may offer an alternative, but accepting it is optional.

Free mainland UK labels

Use our supplied labels, which you must print. Eligible 60-day returns qualify, including pre-drilled named sets. Excluded items, such as pre-drilled configurator and individually cut-down tops, have no free change-of-mind label.

Labels may also be unavailable for:

  • Orders outside mainland UK.
  • Orders under £15 or over £1,000.
  • Shipments over 70kg.
  • More than three returns per customer within 30 days.
  • Clearance items, where stated.

A statutory cancellation right does not itself qualify an excluded item for a free label. Where no free label applies, you pay direct change-of-mind return costs only if we gave the required information before purchase, including an estimate for goods not normally returnable by post. Otherwise, we pay.

We cover appropriate return costs for faults; goodwill shipping terms are agreed before acceptance. For your own courier, use tracking, keep proof and consider insurance for higher-value items. You remain responsible until receipt, subject to legal rights.

Faults and product care

Check your order on arrival, ideally before assembly. Email us with your order number and photos of the problem and packaging where possible. Report delivery damage within seven days if possible; this does not limit legal rights.

For faulty, damaged, misdrilled or incorrect goods, we provide the legally required repair, replacement or refund and arrange or cover appropriate return costs. Assembly, missing packaging, customisation or completed work does not remove these rights.

Raw steel legs can rust when unpainted or stored in humid conditions. They should arrive protected for transit and storage; unfinished steel may need periodic cleaning and protection. Zinc and stainless steel legs suit outdoor use. Other products are not outdoor-rated unless stated on their product page. Damage from unsuitable storage or use is not normally a fault, but contact us about unacceptable condition on arrival or a suspected fault.

Custom work and pre-drilled tops

Measure your space and check the top size and leg positions before requesting drilling or cutting. A worked top may be difficult to reuse. Ask us before ordering if unsure.

  • Named sets: a complete top-and-legs set sold together on one product page qualifies for 60-day returns, including pre-drilling. See our desks, dining tables and coffee tables. A top alone is not a set.
  • Configurator: combine any stocked top and legs. Undrilled parts qualify for 60 days. A top drilled for your chosen legs and positions does not, even when identical to a named set. Eligible stock legs still qualify.
  • Individual work: cut-down to requested dimensions or individual drilling can qualify for the made-to-specification exemption. Where it applies, no statutory change-of-mind cancellation is available, and we do not offer these returns as standard, even before work starts. Contact us promptly about changes.

Standard choices alone do not make goods bespoke. Some drilled tops retain legal 14-day cancellation even for a simple change of mind; classification depends on the specification and work. Before payment, we will show applicable restrictions and confirm drilling, fit and measurements. An item's restriction does not remove another's rights.

If the result is not right, contact us. We may offer a goodwill return for a reusable top, or alteration or discounted replacement otherwise. These are not guaranteed. Any offer before purchase or after delivery records the covered item, period, fees and shipping terms before acceptance. Legal rights always apply.

Drilling and cutting fees

Pre-drilling is £15 per top; cutting charges are agreed before purchase.

  • Statutory cancellation of the top: we refund its drilling fee, including completed, correct work.
  • 60-day named-set return: completed, correct drilling is retained if disclosed before purchase.
  • Goodwill return: completed, correct drilling is retained unless agreed otherwise; cutting-fee terms are agreed before acceptance.
  • Unstarted work: if we agree cancellation before work starts, its fee is fully refunded.
  • Incorrect work: legal remedies apply, including correction, replacement or refund.

Statutory refunds override voluntary fee terms. A fee refund does not itself cancel bespoke goods. Returning legs alone does not refund the top's work.

Refunds and original delivery charges

Statutory cancellation of a whole order includes a standard-delivery refund, even when you pay return postage. Extra delivery upgrades need not be refunded. Original delivery is not refunded under the extra 60-day offer unless legally required; we explain any partial-order delivery refund.

Refunds use your original payment method unless agreed otherwise. For statutory goods cancellation, we refund within 14 days of receiving the goods or evidence of sending them back, whichever is earlier. With no goods to return, this is normally within 14 days of cancellation. No statutory restocking fee applies; lawful deductions are explained.

Where statutory cancellation applies, you can cancel from ordering until 14 days after the day of receipt, normally the last item for split deliveries. Give clear notice before that deadline, then send goods back within 14 days of notice. No reason, particular form or team approval is required. Email us or use any other clear statement; do not wait for our reply to give notice.

You may inspect goods as in a shop. Where lawful, we may deduct lost value from handling beyond checking their nature, characteristics and function. Assembly or use does not automatically remove cancellation rights. Original packaging is not required to exercise them.

Outdoor Guarantee

At The Hairpin Leg Co., we’re committed to quality. Outdoor environments vary widely, and different materials perform very differently depending on conditions. That’s why our Outdoor Guarantee is tailored specifically to the product type and its intended use.

Products Covered

This guarantee is applicable to products sold for outdoor use, including:

Note: All products link to their respective guarantees via the main bullet points at the top of the page.

Transparency Matters

We believe in giving you the full picture. Most outdoor furniture on the market—unless you're spending thousands—is made from coated steel, known as residential grade. It offers a great balance of performance and cost.

Real-world performance depends on both usage and location. A table in a sheltered patio will last far longer than one exposed year-round in a coastal garden. These factors affect only a small number of customers, but we think it’s important to be clear—so you know what to expect and how to get the best from your furniture.

Understanding Outdoor Use

There’s a big difference between commercial-grade and residential-grade outdoor furniture:

  • Commercial Grade – Typically made from rust-resistant materials like stainless steel, galvanised steel or aluminium. Colour finishes are purely aesthetic, and these products can often last 20+ years—even in harsh environments like coastal locations.
  • Residential Grade – Made from durable, powder-coated mild steel. The powder coating provides both the colour and protection. If this coating is chipped or damaged, the exposed steel underneath can rust.

Our Residential Outdoor Guarantee

We offer a 2-Year Guarantee on our residential-grade outdoor products, subject to the following conditions:

  • Location – Applies only in non-coastal areas (5 miles inland+), where salt levels in the air are less elevated.
  • Use Case – For residential/home use only. Commercial use is not covered under this guarantee.
  • Maintenance – Chips and scratches should be touched up with outdoor paint to prevent rusting of the underlying steel.
  • Fixings – Use only outdoor-grade hardware such as stainless steel screws, washers, and protective feet.
  • Placement – Products should be used on solid surfaces like patios or decking. Soft ground (e.g. gravel, soil, bark) will make the protective feet ineffective.

Real-World Performance

Outdoor furniture made from powder-coated mild steel performs well across a wide range of environments—but care and conditions matter:

  • In harsher climates (coastal / industrial) or with poor maintenance, light surface rust may appear within 6 months.
  • In sheltered outdoor spaces, items can last 10+ years with minimal wear.
  • In most home settings, two years of reliable outdoor use is easily achievable.
  • Even if rust appears, it typically does not affect structural strength for many years.
  • And even after long periods of neglect, items can usually be restored with a simple touch-up and some care.

Outdoor Care Guide

  • Use within the intended limits of the guarantee (e.g. non-coastal, residential settings).
  • Touch up any scratches, chips, or worn areas using an outdoor-suitable paint like Hammerite. This can be applied even over minor rust.
  • Cover furniture during the winter to reduce weather exposure.
  • Avoid standing water or consistently damp environments.

Engineered for the elements

TIG and MIG welded steel tube, architectural-grade powder coat: rust-free through every season.

Our 2-year outdoor guarantee

Set of 2 trapezium steel legs with the outdoor hardware pack at 40cm bench height, carrying benches up to five people. The trapezium is wide at the base and tapers slightly to the top: a modern profile that looks right under a long table.

Outdoor readiness comes from the hardware pack: stainless steel screws in place of corrodible zinc-plated ones, and M10 adjustable locking feet to level the frame on uneven ground. The frame itself is TIG and MIG welded box section steel in satin black powder coat, rated for residential outdoor use.

Your top is the other main consideration: make sure it's strong enough for the span. Planked timber works best outside, with rain beading through the gaps; join the planks with our C-Channel plank joining kit, and stiffen thinner ones with an L-Channel stiffening bar across the length. Sixteen stainless screws and the locking feet come in the box; the build guide arrives by email.

FAQ

Do steel table legs rust outdoors?

Bare steel would. These are protected by a satin black powder coat, with stainless steel screws and feet, and rated for residential outdoor use. The steel under the coating is mild steel, so rust only becomes possible where a hard knock chips the coating through; touch up any chips. Cover the table through winter and the legs go on for years.

What's different from the indoor box section legs?

The leg is the same TIG and MIG welded steel frame as our indoor box section legs. The outdoor hardware pack is the upgrade: stainless steel screws in place of zinc-plated ones, which corrode from the inside and can snap once moisture gets into outdoor wood, and M10 adjustable locking feet with stainless threads and glass-filled nylon pads. Fixings are the first thing to fail on an outdoor table, so that's where the spec goes.

How do the adjustable feet work on uneven patios?

Each foot winds in and out on a stainless M10 thread, then locks with a nut so it stays put. Start with every foot screwed all the way in, then wind one foot out slightly to take out any rock; on a very uneven floor you can adjust further. They also lift the legs free from any standing water.
