Choosing the right size legs

We make legs in a variety of standard heights:

You can find more detailed information about what height legs will be best for you here.

Will the legs be strong enough?

  • Short legs (under 40cm) – Shorter legs are inherently stronger and stiffer than their taller counterparts. You will be hard pressed to build something on small legs where weight is an issue. If you have any specific concerns, get in touch.

For our taller leg options, you can find weight loading guidelines for our different options here:

Will I need extra legs?

A single set of legs should be sufficient for most tabletops up to 1.8m - 2m long. For longer tables (2m+) please read our guide here.

Choosing the right finish

Our metal table legs are made with mild steel. We offer a number of different finish options to suit your project:

  • Raw Steel – This is uncoated steel in its natural form and will rust if left unfinished (indoors as well as out). We offer this option for those looking for a rusted industrial look or wanting to apply their own finish.
  • Clear Coat – These legs have a clear powder coat layer over the steel to protect them from rusting while maintaining the natural colour of the steel.
  • Colour Powder Coats – We offer all of our legs in a black powder coat, and the hairpins come in a variety of other colours too.
  • Electro-plated options – We currently offer hairpin legs electro-plated in Copper, Brass, Chrome, and Zinc.
  • Outdoor finishes – Some of our finishes are suitable for use outdoors. You can find all of our outdoor grade leg options here.

You can find some detailed guides on choosing the right finish here.

What's included?

All of our legs come with free wood screws and appropriate floor protectors.

How do I attach the legs, and what tools will I need?

With screws included, attaching our legs to your project should be very simple. We just recommend a few things:

  • A tape measure to get the positions of the legs in the right place
  • A pencil to mark the positions of the screw holes
  • A drill to predrill guide holes for the screws. We recommend a 2.5mm diameter guide hole for soft woods and a 3mm diameter guide hole for hard woods
  • A screwdriver to screw the legs in

That should cover almost everything you need to consider when choosing some of our legs. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

  • Should arrive with an appropriate protective coating for transit/storage.
  • May require periodic maintenance (cleaning/protecting) if left unfinished.
  • Items that have rusted due to storage or use after delivery are not eligible for return as “faulty”.

Outdoor Use

Products suitable for outdoor use include:

  • Zinc table legs

Outdoor Guarantee

At The Hairpin Leg Co., we’re committed to quality. Outdoor environments vary widely, and different materials perform very differently depending on conditions. That’s why our Outdoor Guarantee is tailored specifically to the product type and its intended use.

Products Covered

This guarantee is applicable to products sold for outdoor use, including:

Note: All products link to their respective guarantees via the main bullet points at the top of the page.

Transparency Matters

We believe in giving you the full picture. Most outdoor furniture on the market—unless you're spending thousands—is made from coated steel, known as residential grade. It offers a great balance of performance and cost.

Real-world performance depends on both usage and location. A table in a sheltered patio will last far longer than one exposed year-round in a coastal garden. These factors affect only a small number of customers, but we think it’s important to be clear—so you know what to expect and how to get the best from your furniture.

Understanding Outdoor Use

There’s a big difference between commercial-grade and residential-grade outdoor furniture:

  • Commercial Grade – Typically made from rust-resistant materials like stainless steel, galvanised steel or aluminium. Colour finishes are purely aesthetic, and these products can often last 20+ years—even in harsh environments like coastal locations.
  • Residential Grade – Made from durable, powder-coated mild steel. The powder coating provides both the colour and protection. If this coating is chipped or damaged, the exposed steel underneath can rust.

Our Residential Outdoor Guarantee

We offer a 2-Year Guarantee on our residential-grade outdoor products, subject to the following conditions:

  • Location – Applies only in non-coastal areas (5 miles inland+), where salt levels in the air are less elevated.
  • Use Case – For residential/home use only. Commercial use is not covered under this guarantee.
  • Maintenance – Chips and scratches should be touched up with outdoor paint to prevent rusting of the underlying steel.
  • Fixings – Use only outdoor-grade hardware such as stainless steel screws, washers, and protective feet.
  • Placement – Products should be used on solid surfaces like patios or decking. Soft ground (e.g. gravel, soil, bark) will make the protective feet ineffective.

Real-World Performance

Outdoor furniture made from powder-coated mild steel performs well across a wide range of environments—but care and conditions matter:

  • In harsher climates (coastal / industrial) or with poor maintenance, light surface rust may appear within 6 months.
  • In sheltered outdoor spaces, items can last 10+ years with minimal wear.
  • In most home settings, two years of reliable outdoor use is easily achievable.
  • Even if rust appears, it typically does not affect structural strength for many years.
  • And even after long periods of neglect, items can usually be restored with a simple touch-up and some care.

Outdoor Care Guide

  • Use within the intended limits of the guarantee (e.g. non-coastal, residential settings).
  • Touch up any scratches, chips, or worn areas using an outdoor-suitable paint like Hammerite. This can be applied even over minor rust.
  • Cover furniture during the winter to reduce weather exposure.
  • Avoid standing water or consistently damp environments.

Engineered for the elements

TIG and MIG welded steel tube, architectural-grade powder coat: rust-free through every season.

Our 2-year outdoor guarantee

Set of 2 square steel legs with the outdoor hardware pack: the wide-body table frame, 78cm across, at 71cm dining height for tops up to 160cm wide. The square frame is exactly that: a plain, clean square, sometimes called the O shape. Straight lines, simple, clean.

The outdoor spec is in the hardware: stainless steel fixing screws made for wet outdoor timber, and M10 adjustable locking feet with stainless threads that level the frame on uneven paving. The legs are TIG and MIG welded box section steel under a satin black powder coat, rated for residential outdoor use.

For the top, planked timber works best outside: rain beads down between the planks instead of collecting on the surface. Join the planks into one top with our C-Channel plank joining kit, and if your planks run thin, an L-Channel stiffening bar across the length keeps the top rigid. In the box: sixteen stainless screws and the locking feet; the build guide arrives by email.

FAQ

Do steel table legs rust outdoors?

Bare steel would. These are protected by a satin black powder coat, with stainless steel screws and feet, and rated for residential outdoor use. The steel under the coating is mild steel, so rust only becomes possible where a hard knock chips the coating through; touch up any chips. Cover the table through winter and the legs go on for years.

What's different from the indoor box section legs?

The leg is the same TIG and MIG welded steel frame as our indoor box section legs. The outdoor hardware pack is the upgrade: stainless steel screws in place of zinc-plated ones, which corrode from the inside and can snap once moisture gets into outdoor wood, and M10 adjustable locking feet with stainless threads and glass-filled nylon pads. Fixings are the first thing to fail on an outdoor table, so that's where the spec goes.

How do the adjustable feet work on uneven patios?

Each foot winds in and out on a stainless M10 thread, then locks with a nut so it stays put. Start with every foot screwed all the way in, then wind one foot out slightly to take out any rock; on a very uneven floor you can adjust further. They also lift the legs free from any standing water.
