Material Considerations

Raw steel table legs:

  • May develop surface rust over time if unpainted or stored/used in humid conditions.
  • Should arrive with an appropriate protective coating for transit/storage.
  • May require periodic maintenance (cleaning/protecting) if left unfinished.
  • Items that have rusted due to storage or use after delivery are not eligible for return as “faulty”.

Outdoor Use

Products suitable for outdoor use include:

  • Zinc table legs
  • Stainless steel table legs

All other products are not rated for outdoor use unless explicitly stated on the product page.

Outdoor Guarantee

At The Hairpin Leg Co., we’re committed to quality. Outdoor environments vary widely, and different materials perform very differently depending on conditions. That’s why our Outdoor Guarantee is tailored specifically to the product type and its intended use.

Products Covered

This guarantee is applicable to products sold for outdoor use, including:

Note: All products link to their respective guarantees via the main bullet points at the top of the page.

Transparency Matters

We believe in giving you the full picture. Most outdoor furniture on the market—unless you're spending thousands—is made from coated steel, known as residential grade. It offers a great balance of performance and cost.

Real-world performance depends on both usage and location. A table in a sheltered patio will last far longer than one exposed year-round in a coastal garden. These factors affect only a small number of customers, but we think it’s important to be clear—so you know what to expect and how to get the best from your furniture.

Understanding Outdoor Use

There’s a big difference between commercial-grade and residential-grade outdoor furniture:

  • Commercial Grade – Typically made from rust-resistant materials like stainless steel, galvanised steel or aluminium. Colour finishes are purely aesthetic, and these products can often last 20+ years—even in harsh environments like coastal locations.
  • Residential Grade – Made from durable, powder-coated mild steel. The powder coating provides both the colour and protection. If this coating is chipped or damaged, the exposed steel underneath can rust.

Our Residential Outdoor Guarantee

We offer a 2-Year Guarantee on our residential-grade outdoor products, subject to the following conditions:

  • Location – Applies only in non-coastal areas (5 miles inland+), where salt levels in the air are less elevated.
  • Use Case – For residential/home use only. Commercial use is not covered under this guarantee.
  • Maintenance – Chips and scratches should be touched up with outdoor paint to prevent rusting of the underlying steel.
  • Fixings – Use only outdoor-grade hardware such as stainless steel screws, washers, and protective feet.
  • Placement – Products should be used on solid surfaces like patios or decking. Soft ground (e.g. gravel, soil, bark) will make the protective feet ineffective.

Real-World Performance

Outdoor furniture made from powder-coated mild steel performs well across a wide range of environments—but care and conditions matter:

  • In harsher climates (coastal / industrial) or with poor maintenance, light surface rust may appear within 6 months.
  • In sheltered outdoor spaces, items can last 10+ years with minimal wear.
  • In most home settings, two years of reliable outdoor use is easily achievable.
  • Even if rust appears, it typically does not affect structural strength for many years.
  • And even after long periods of neglect, items can usually be restored with a simple touch-up and some care.

Outdoor Care Guide

  • Use within the intended limits of the guarantee (e.g. non-coastal, residential settings).
  • Touch up any scratches, chips, or worn areas using an outdoor-suitable paint like Hammerite. This can be applied even over minor rust.
  • Cover furniture during the winter to reduce weather exposure.
  • Avoid standing water or consistently damp environments.

FAQ

Attaching our legs to stone, glass or composite tabletops

These legs are not freestanding. Therefore it is important that you are able to get a really strong attachment to your tabletop and ensure that the attachment will be able to withstand the weight of the table.

For materials that are not easy to screw the legs directly into, your simplest and most reliable options we have would be to use one of our free standing table frames.

These are incredibly strong and will be suitable for the heaviest projects. Depending on the specs and intended use for your table, you may be able to rest the top on the frame, or if you want to secure the top to the frame, you can simply use glue or even some heavy-duty double-sided tape.

If you would prefer to use some of our non-freestanding legs, then an excellent way to ensure you get a strong fixing would be to glue a piece of 24mm plywood, cut a bit smaller than your top surface, to the underside using a strong adhesive to then screw the legs into that.

Attaching our legs to Ikea, laminate or veneer tabletops

Some Ikea, laminate or veneer tabletops will not be made of solid wood, but instead have a chipboard, particleboard or sometimes even honeycomb or hollow structure inside. These materials will not be strong enough for you to screw into, and will likely degrade around the screw resulting in a wobble or potentially even dangerous table.

You should check the product description to find out what these tabletops are made of, and if they are not solid wood or something strong like plywood then it might be best to choose one of our free standing table frames.

As the table frames are freestanding themselves, you will not need to worry about getting a really strong attachment, and you may be able just to rest the top on the frame. Or if you want to secure the top to the frame, you can simply use glue or even some heavy-duty double-sided tape.

If you would prefer to use some of our non-freestanding legs, then an excellent way to ensure you get a strong fixing would be to glue a piece of 24mm plywood, cut a bit smaller than your top surface, to the underside using a strong adhesive to then screw the legs into that.

Can I buy a pack size other than advertised?

Sorry, but we currently only offer our products in complete sets. Whether it's a set of legs for a table or a set of brackets for a shelf, our items are sold in full packs. This helps us ensure that every set you receive is 100% identical.

Our meticulous manufacturing process involves hand-crafting most items using materials from the same batch. This allows consistency across all pieces in a set, from the same welder welding to the same painter painting. We appreciate your understanding and assure you that this approach allows us to maintain our high standards of quality.
