There’s a certain kind of consideration that goes into a well-styled desk.
Not the aspirational, hyper-productive kind that holds the message you should be doing more, but the gentler promise of you might actually want to sit here.
This setup leans firmly into the latter - a small, thoughtful corner that feels equal parts practical and inspiring :) we hope it inspires you!
So, without further ado, here's how we created this desk space.
The case for gentle structure
At first glance, you might describe this as a minimal desk set up: a pale wooden surface, slender, pastel-green Hairpin Legs, and just enough on top to suggest a life unfolding. But look closer and you’ll see it’s doing something very deliberate; creating structure without rigidity.
Take the use of wall hooks for example. Carrying the soft green palette that begins with our desk legs, the playful, bold shape of our J Hooks not only casts the eyes up and creates balance and texture across the space, they also serve a real purpose.
You can hang things from them as and when you feel, lightly decorating your desk with character without committing to anything permanent. Artwork, tools or ideas, all is possible with these hooks, keeping your space decorated but clutter-free.
This is all to say, it's important to keep your desk space fresh and we love how these hooks encourage that.
Lighting that sets the scene
Mood lighting isn't exclusive to cosy living areas or restful bedrooms. How you light your space creates an opportunity to really set the tone for your working day, whether you're desiring an energising start or something more calming to get you in the zone.
To complement our choice of a muted palette, our focus here was to create a small pool of warmth that contrasts with the otherwise neutral wall. What we love about this lighting choice is that it doesn’t flood the space - it anchors it.
This kind of lighting is key if you’re working with a pared-back setup. Overhead lights tend to flatten everything, but a directional lamp introduces depth and a sense of intention to your desk.
Plants, but not for the sake of it
We've included two plants here, and they’re doing very different jobs. On the left, a spider plant spills outwards, softening the edges of the desk and adding movement. On the right, a more upright plant creates additional height and brings balance to the overall look.
Together, they create a visual bracket around the workspace, while also adding a touch of nature, which is always nice to have in a working environment.
This is the trick with plants - don’t just add them, place them. Better a choice few rather than a cacophony of plants. It also softens the load when it comes to watering!
Objects that earn their keep
A water bottle, a couple of small art cards, maybe a notebook just out of focus; nothing here feels accidental, but nothing feels precious either.
The choice of items are few, but they’re not sterile. You want your desk space to feel used and lived in, inviting you back to the space with its sense of familiarity and calm. Nobody wants a working space that they feel they have to work to keep clean, or is full of things that are too fussy to touch. This is your desk, after all - let it feel that way :)
The design matters
What we love about this desk—and making your own furniture overall—is how it's not about hiding the design and construction.
Our Hairpin Legs provide a slim metal support, attached by screws via a fixing plate that we feel become part of the aesthetic language of the space. It’s a good reminder that styling isn’t only about what sits on top of a surface; it's about the architecture of the interior as a whole.
