Choosing the right size legs

We make legs in a variety of standard heights:

You can find more detailed information about what height legs will be best for you here.

Will the legs be strong enough?

  • Short legs (under 40cm) – Shorter legs are inherently stronger and stiffer than their taller counterparts. You will be hard pressed to build something on small legs where weight is an issue. If you have any specific concerns, get in touch.

For our taller leg options, you can find weight loading guidelines for our different options here:

Will I need extra legs?

A single set of legs should be sufficient for most tabletops up to 1.8m - 2m long. For longer tables (2m+) please read our guide here.

Choosing the right finish

Our metal table legs are made with mild steel. We offer a number of different finish options to suit your project:

  • Raw Steel – This is uncoated steel in its natural form and will rust if left unfinished (indoors as well as out). We offer this option for those looking for a rusted industrial look or wanting to apply their own finish.
  • Clear Coat – These legs have a clear powder coat layer over the steel to protect them from rusting while maintaining the natural colour of the steel.
  • Colour Powder Coats – We offer all of our legs in a black powder coat, and the hairpins come in a variety of other colours too.
  • Electro-plated options – We currently offer hairpin legs electro-plated in Copper, Brass, Chrome, and Zinc.
  • Outdoor finishes – Some of our finishes are suitable for use outdoors. You can find all of our outdoor grade leg options here.

You can find some detailed guides on choosing the right finish here.

What's included?

All of our legs come with free wood screws and appropriate floor protectors.

How do I attach the legs, and what tools will I need?

With screws included, attaching our legs to your project should be very simple. We just recommend a few things:

  • A tape measure to get the positions of the legs in the right place
  • A pencil to mark the positions of the screw holes
  • A drill to predrill guide holes for the screws. We recommend a 2.5mm diameter guide hole for soft woods and a 3mm diameter guide hole for hard woods
  • A screwdriver to screw the legs in

That should cover almost everything you need to consider when choosing some of our legs. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Material Considerations

Raw steel table legs:

  • May develop surface rust over time if unpainted or stored/used in humid conditions.
  • Should arrive with an appropriate protective coating for transit/storage.
  • May require periodic maintenance (cleaning/protecting) if left unfinished.
  • Items that have rusted due to storage or use after delivery are not eligible for return as “faulty”.

Outdoor Use

Products suitable for outdoor use include:

  • Zinc table legs
  • Stainless steel table legs

All other products are not rated for outdoor use unless explicitly stated on the product page.

FAQ

How strong are box section legs? Are they suitable for my project?

Box Section Legs can support up to 150kg, assuming an optimally built tabletop — structurally sound timber over 30mm thick, secured with appropriate fixings.

Made from 75mm x 25mm furniture-grade steel, the legs feature TIG and MIG welded joints and an extra-thick base plate. This construction makes them naturally strong and durable.

We care as much about build quality as we do about raw strength. Each leg is fixed with eight screws, but note: without bracing between legs, lateral wobble may occur on heavier tables.

For projects over 150kg or using less-than-ideal materials, we recommend our self-supporting table frames, which don’t rely on the tabletop for structural integrity.

Should I choose the standard table width or the table wide option?

Our table-height Industrial Box Section legs come in two widths: 58cm and 78cm.
• 58cm legs suit tabletops up to 120cm wide
• 78cm legs work best for 100–150cm wide tables

If your table is between 100–120cm, choose based on your preferred look and function—more overhang for extra seating space, or less for a chunkier, grounded feel.

How do I attach my box section legs and what fixings to use?

For wood, use plain wood screws directly into the wooden surface for the most simple and durable fitting method. A small 1-2mm pilot hole is suggested for hardwoods to ease the screw in and reduce the risk of cracking.

In all of our table legs, we provide 4.5mm wood screws, suitable for most sized tables over 18mm thicker.

If you are building a large table, go as thick as a 5mm wood screw and maximise the length for your top to ensure the best engagement.

Threaded inserts can be a good choice if your project requires assembly/disassembly of the legs many times or you are shipping off to a customer and want a more professional finish. We suggest using an M5 bolt / 5mm threaded insert to fit into our legs 6mm hole. This provides a little wiggle room for wood expansion and hole alignment.

Box section leg placement is largely a matter of choice.. If you want chairs at the end of your table, we advise setting those legs inward by approximately 30-40cm. For more information, feel free to download our detailed box section build guide.
