Choosing the right size legs

We make legs in a variety of standard heights:

You can find more detailed information about what height legs will be best for you here.

Will the legs be strong enough?

  • Short legs (under 40cm) – Shorter legs are inherently stronger and stiffer than their taller counterparts. You will be hard pressed to build something on small legs where weight is an issue. If you have any specific concerns, get in touch.

For our taller leg options, you can find weight loading guidelines for our different options here:

Will I need extra legs?

A single set of legs should be sufficient for most tabletops up to 1.8m - 2m long. For longer tables (2m+) please read our guide here.

Choosing the right finish

Our metal table legs are made with mild steel. We offer a number of different finish options to suit your project:

  • Raw Steel – This is uncoated steel in its natural form and will rust if left unfinished (indoors as well as out). We offer this option for those looking for a rusted industrial look or wanting to apply their own finish.
  • Clear Coat – These legs have a clear powder coat layer over the steel to protect them from rusting while maintaining the natural colour of the steel.
  • Colour Powder Coats – We offer all of our legs in a black powder coat, and the hairpins come in a variety of other colours too.
  • Electro-plated options – We currently offer hairpin legs electro-plated in Copper, Brass, Chrome, and Zinc.
  • Outdoor finishes – Some of our finishes are suitable for use outdoors. You can find all of our outdoor grade leg options here.

You can find some detailed guides on choosing the right finish here.

What's included?

All of our legs come with free wood screws and appropriate floor protectors.

How do I attach the legs, and what tools will I need?

With screws included, attaching our legs to your project should be very simple. We just recommend a few things:

  • A tape measure to get the positions of the legs in the right place
  • A pencil to mark the positions of the screw holes
  • A drill to predrill guide holes for the screws. We recommend a 2.5mm diameter guide hole for soft woods and a 3mm diameter guide hole for hard woods
  • A screwdriver to screw the legs in

That should cover almost everything you need to consider when choosing some of our legs. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

  • May require periodic maintenance (cleaning/protecting) if left unfinished.
  • Items that have rusted due to storage or use after delivery are not eligible for return as “faulty”.

Outdoor Use

Products suitable for outdoor use include:

Customer reviews

Rated 4.9/5 from 8,000+ reviews across Reviews.io, Trustpilot and Google.

Mid-century modern. Made for makers.

True to the original hairpins designed by Henry Glass in the 1940s.

Set of 4 steel hairpin legs at 71cm, the standard height for desks and dining tables. Pick a design and finish, screw the legs straight to your top with the hardware supplied, and the table is done.

Two choices matter. Rod count first: 3-rod is the right call under a desk or dining table; 2-rod suits side tables and compact builds. Then thickness: Classic 10mm supports standard size desks and dining tables, and Heavy Duty 12mm carries larger, heavier builds like an 8-seater solid oak table.

Each leg is solid steel rod on a thick 4mm base plate, so the finished table feels planted; we've made hairpin legs for the best part of 15 years, and our own desks and dining tables at home stand on them. Black powder coat is our most popular finish of the fifteen; chrome, zinc and stainless steel are the outdoor-rated picks. Every set includes wood screws, rubber protector feet and a fitting guide.

The classic

Modelled After the Classics

These legs stay true to the original hairpins designed by Henry Glass in the 1940s: a slimline flute set at a slightly reclined angle, available in 2-rod and 3-rod styles.

SCREWS AND FEET INCLUDED

Free wood screws and floor protectors.

PROFESSIONAL FINISHES

Stop rust and add style. 15 finishes to choose from.

4MM BASE PLATES

Thick, wide plates for rock-solid mounting.

SOLID STEEL ROD

Cold-formed steel rod, never hollow tube.

The range

From Dresser to Bar

We stock leg sizes for every project from 10cm to 102cm. Classic 10mm suits almost all of them; Heavy Duty 12mm is there for large dining tables and heavier builds.

The finishes

Fifteen Professional Finishes

Every finish looks great and protects your legs from rusting, except one: raw steel, 100% natural and bare, for the metal exactly as it comes.

Hairpin leg finishes, labelled

Colour powder coat

Black, White, Duck Egg Blue, Yellow, Red, Pastel Green and Orange. Powder coat protects your legs from rust while adding colour to your build.

Clear Coat

The raw steel look, sealed. A slight sheen over the bare metal, with none of the rusting.

Raw Steel

100% natural and bare. It will rust, even indoors; choose it to finish the legs yourself or for a weathered, industrial look.

Gold

Real brass electroplating with a mirror polish. New brass reads as gold, so we call it what you see.

Satin Brass

The same real brass, brushed to a satin finish. It looks like machined brass rather than polished, between brand new and aged.

Copper

Real copper electroplate with a striking, modern look. It ages into a soft patina over time.

Chrome

Polished to a mirror finish. Eye-catching against a dark top, and outdoor-rated.

Zinc

Electro-treated with a self-healing zinc layer for strong rust resistance, indoors or out. The bright finish softens to a soft grey over time.

Stainless Steel

316 marine-grade steel that doesn't oxidise: the look never changes. The quiet choice for gardens and kitchens.

The engineering

The Cupped Weld

Each rod seats into a pressed cup in the base plate and is welded from the back. That puts more weld in the joint, fuses the steel better, and leaves a clean face on the side you see. It's one of the most innovative things we've done on hairpins, and it's why the finished leg feels the way it does.

FAQ

How much weight can hairpin legs hold?

More than a desk or dining table asks of them. Choose by build: more rods and thicker rod carry more. Classic 10mm suits most builds at every height; Heavy Duty 12mm carries large dining tables and heavier tops. We publish conservative guidance rather than certified ratings, and the standard behind it is feel: no wobble, flex or movement from the table you work or eat at every day. The thicker rod and 4mm base plates are what hold that standard on bigger builds.

How sturdy are hairpin legs?

Very, when the leg matches the build. Stability comes from four things: solid steel rod rather than hollow tube, a thick 4mm base plate that spreads the fixing, the right rod count for the height, and all four screws in each plate. At desk and dining height the 3-rod design is the right call; it triangulates the load and keeps a dining table planted.

What's the difference between Classic 10mm and Heavy Duty 12mm?

Rod thickness, and what it carries. Classic 10mm is the standard hairpin profile and suits most builds, desks and dining tables included. Heavy Duty 12mm is the same design in thicker steel for large dining tables and heavier tops; from across the room the two look almost identical. If your top is solid hardwood or seats more than six, go Heavy Duty.
